Once your class have got the hang of addition, their number skills will soar and these Year 4 'Methods of Addition' lessons are a great way to teach your class some of the different methods they can use for solving a variety of addition problems. They will find out how to make approximate answers using rounding before tackling vertical addition (with and without exchanging) and other mental and informal methods.

This lesson starts by teaching children how to round three-digit numbers to the nearest hundred to help them find approximate answers before recapping how to use the expanded method to solve addition calculations, using their approximations to check for accuracy. The main activities provides opportunities for children to practise this whilst the alternative activity has a palindromic number challenge to tackle!
