Lesson 1: Natural Sculptures

Children begin by exploring what sculpture is and looking at examples of artwork made from a variety of materials. They discover how artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, Patrick Dougherty and Jaakko Pernu use natural materials to create sculptures, before learning different techniques for constructing their own using sticks, twigs, play-dough and wool.

Using the differentiated activity sheets for inspiration, children create sculptures of objects, structures or scenes, experimenting with ways to join and arrange their materials. Alternatively, they can follow instructions to make a decorative picture frame using sticks and other natural materials.
