This Ruby Bridges lesson introduces your KS1 class to the history of school segregation in 1960s America and the courageous actions of six-year-old Ruby Bridges. At a time when Black and white children were treated unfairly and made to attend separate schools, Ruby became one of the first Black children to attend an all-white school in the southern United States. Her bravery became an important symbol of the Civil Rights Movement and helped challenge unfair laws and attitudes across America.

Lesson 1: Ruby Bridges

During the whole class teaching input, children will briefly learn about what segregation meant for black and white people in America, before finding out about Ruby's first day at school, and the momentous changes this seemingly normal act put into motion.

In the activities provided, children are asked to put themselves into Ruby's shoes, and imagine how she might have felt at different times. In the alternative task provided, children will explore the experience of segregation in a group activity.
