Across these five ready-to-teach lessons, children explore the concept of seasons by naming and describing them, matching them to simple descriptions and developing seasonal vocabulary through discussion, images and guided questioning. They practise using adjectives and simple sentence structures, orally rehearsing sentences before writing, with reminders about capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. Children are introduced to the concept of a diary by exploring example entries and identifying key features such as dates, use of ‘I’, and recounting events and feelings. They then generate ideas and plan a seasonal diary entry using a simple planning grid, and then use this to write their own seasonal diary entries.

Each lesson comes with an easy-to-follow plan, a set of informative and engaging PDF slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources to support your class in their independent learning.

Lesson 1: Describing the Seasons

In this first lesson, children will explore the concept of seasons, discussing what a season is and naming the four seasons of the year. They will match season names to simple descriptions and share their knowledge and opinions about each one.

Using pictures and guided questioning, children will begin to identify describing words for the seasons, then independently find, sort and record adjectives to describe them.

In their independent activities, children will answer questions about diary entries. In the alternative activity, children work in groups to sort cards according to whether they are diary entries or not.

Children will be shown how to plan a diary entry using a simple planning grid, making notes about the season, the weather, what happened and how the writer felt. In their independent activities, they will plan a diary entry of their own.
