Signs and Symbols - Lesson 2: The Seder Meanings

This first lesson challenges your class to identify everyday signs and symbols, understanding how a symbol can have meaning, then moves on to explore the symbols from the popular Bible story of Noah's ark.

This lesson looks at the Jewish Passover story and examines what each of the foods on the Seder plate symbolises. They will then relate this to their own experiences of having special foods at special occasions. There is also the chance to consider how other foods could be given symbolic meanings, such as seeds representing new life and growth.

This fun lesson explores some familiar metaphors before looking at Christian metaphors and the reasons behind why they are used. Your class will consider the meaning behind metaphors such as ‘God is my rock’ and think about how these metaphors can help Christians in their faith and understanding.

Using examples from a range of world religions, this lesson examines different ideas about who and what God is and what he means to people. It also gives your class the chance to reflect on what God means to them personally.

This final lesson looks at a variety of different Christian symbols, including the trinity, and takes your class on a hunt to see if they can spot each of the symbols on the pictures on the slides. They can then explain in their own words what different symbols from Christianity and other religions mean, and consider the idea that symbols can be expressed in ways other than through images.

The fun, end of unit quiz is the perfect opportunity for pupils to demonstrate everything they have learnt about different religious symbols and what they mean during the lessons.
