Stories of Hinduism

This KS2 Religious Education scheme of work for Year 5 and 6 introduces your class to Hindu concepts using stories in an exciting and engaging way. The lessons provide your children with information about who Hindus worship and the different forms their God, Brahman, can take, whilst also giving them the chance to think about how Hindu teachings relate to their own lives.

One God, Many Forms

The first lesson in this series provides your children with a brief overview of what Hinduism is and where it is prevalent today. Your class will then be introduced to some of the forms the Hindu God Brahman takes, before hearing the story of Knappar the Hunter and finding out what Shivalingas are.

Representations of Krishna

This lesson looks at how Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, is represented in two different stories, whilst giving your class the opportunity to think about why Krishna is represented in these ways. Children will use the stories as the basis for considering some big questions, such as ‘Is it always wrong to steal?’ and will identify what these stories teach Hindus today.

Teachings about Success

Children will start this lesson by considering what they work hard at and what they have succeeded at so far in life, even when they have found things difficult to master initially. They will then read two stories that will teach them about Hindu beliefs on hard work, effort, and success.

Teachings about Punishment and Forgiveness

Do people deserve to suffer? Do they deserve to be forgiven? Share the story of Ajamil with your class, giving them the opportunity to discuss their opinions. The children will then have the opportunity to explore some statements in depth before trying to persuade their peers to agree with the statement they have been given.

Telling the Truth

The final lesson in this series explores a Hindu story about telling the truth. Your class will be encouraged to think about times when they might find it difficult, to tell the truth, and the consequences their actions might have.

This Year 5/6 RE Knowledge Organiser has been created to complement the study of the Hinduism strand within our RE and worldviews resource offer. It is designed to support your children's understanding of key vocabulary and big ideas covered in this scheme of work, while signposting prior learning. Children are also encouraged to reflect on 'Ways of Knowing' about religion and worldviews, and to think deeply about the topic through the 'Thinking Questions' provided.
