This Year 2 working scientifically scheme of work is all about 'Super Scientists'. Your class will have the opportunity to learn about scientists and their discoveries while developing their own 'working scientifically' skills. This scheme will extend their knowledge through a variety of fun, practical and informative activities, including investigating gravity, light, sound, medical science including reflexes and germs, as well as how to make a simple circuit.

Isaac Newton - Light
In this lesson, your class will learn more about Newton and discover that he continued looking at the world scientifically after developing his theory of gravity. Your class will investigate Newton's light discoveries, either investigating what happens when light passes through a prism or by making their own focusing telescope.

Maggie Aderin Pocock - Wind
In the third lesson of this series, your class will learn about Maggie Aderin-Pocock and her amazing work. Your class will find out how her work has helped us to better understand space and how it is impacting our understanding of climate change. Your children will make a wind vane and investigate the direction wind travels. Alternatively they can make an anemometer and investigate wind speed.

Alexander Graham Bell - Sound
In the fourth lesson of this series, your class will find out why Bell became interested in sound and how he communicated with his deaf mother. Your class will make a string telephone and investigate how to improve the sound quality. Alternatively they can play barrier games to challenge their listening skills.

Our senses and reflexes
During this lesson, your class will explore an overview of scientific discoveries in the field of medicine. They will then be challenged to put their reflexes or their senses to the test, seeing if they can record their information and think like scientists. To conclude the lesson, your class will set up an experiment about germs that will be used in lesson six.

What makes us ill?
Now that your class has found out about some key scientific discoveries, they will explore how Florence Nightingale and Alexander Fleming accidentally improved our health care. They will either research the importance of hand washing or investigate hand washing through practical activities. To conclude the lesson, your class will learn about Joseph Lister and think about what it would be like if we didn't have sterile surgeries today.
