What qualities did the Wright brothers possess that made them such an effective team of inventors and entrepreneurs? As they learn about the extraordinary work of the brothers as they raced to build the world's first powered flying machine, children are challenged to consider how they too can be effective team members.

#TheCompleteSeries3lessons

Teamwork is not the only focus of these lessons, however, as children will go on to consider how to work scientifically as they design, make, test and improve paper gliders. They'll have to work together, interpreting and applying the results of their tests as they race to create gliders with a stable, predictable flight pattern – eventually adding rubber-band power to make them fly even further!

This downloadable series of lessons comes with lesson plans, slideshow presentations and printable teaching resources.

This scheme of work is also part of a Topic Bundle. Perfect if you are teaching 'Achievers and Inventors' as a cross-curricular topic.

#Lesson1TerrificTeamwork

Find out all about the brothers, Wilbur and Orville – and their lifetime's work developing the first ever powered aircraft. Challenge children to consider and discuss what qualities made them both effective entrepreneurs, and a great team. After that, it's over to your class, as they work together to 'invent' a product, or take part in team games and activities!

This downloadable lesson comes with a lesson plan, a slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated challenge cards
  • Teacher's notes
  • Cue cards
  • Blank drawing/writing frames
#Lesson2AScientificMethod

The brothers worked very differently to some of their competitors; they used scientific methods to test and improve their prototype aircraft designs. Challenge your children to identify aspects of these methods which they can then apply to their own explorations, as they make and test paper gliders.

This downloadable lesson comes with a lesson plan, a slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Paper glider design instructions
#Lesson3PoweredFlight

Remind children of the three aspects of the 'flying problem' which the brothers had to overcome in order to build a successful aircraft, then challenge them to improve a basic paper glider design, including adding rubber band power to make it fly further! Children are also instructed to consider how to ensure their gliders fly predictably.

This downloadable lesson comes with a lesson plan, a slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Challenge card
