Give your children a chance to show what they already know by naming, describing and sorting some familiar 2D and 3D shapes in engaging lesson. Your class will then be able to work on one of the differentiated learning activities that include practising reading, tracing or writing the names of shapes as well as finding and labelling them.

Your class will begin by recapping the learning from the previous lesson, then they will build on this by looking at the properties of 3D shapes. This Year 1 shapes lesson opens by getting your class to describe and sort 3D shapes according to their properties. Describing shapes by their properties can be a tricky task, so this lesson gives your children the opportunity to use a range of mathematical vocabulary and develop their confidence. This lesson focuses on just one shape property: the flat faces of shapes. By focusing on this property, children are able to build on their learning about the properties of 2D shapes.
