Let's Solve Missing Number Problems - The Complete Series (5 lessons)

Each lesson in this Year 1 Maths scheme of work includes detailed lesson plans, engaging slides, differentiated worksheets and a range of printable resources to help your class become more secure in solving missing number problems.

The first lesson in this scheme of work allows your class time to recap and practise how to add and subtract numbers to twenty. They will use pictures and objects to solve simple addition and subtraction questions, preparing them for some harder concepts in the lessons to follow.

Children are to help Sam, the sweet-shop owner in this lesson, fill bags of sweets! Your class will use counters to help Sam find how many more sweets are needed to make different bags to sell. Children will become familiar with the 'count up' method and will solve missing number problems using this method.

This lesson reinforces the concept of finding more to make a total with the use of number lines. Your children will use counters to make jumps up the number line to solve missing number sentences. They will also begin to solve questions with the missing number at the beginning of the number sentence.

Challenge your class to look at two rows of objects and determine what differences there are between them. Your children will count up to find the difference between two groups of objects using pictures and objects. They will then use multi-link cubes, games and word problems to find the difference between two numbers.

Your children will use all the skills they have developed in this scheme of work to solve mixed addition and subtraction problems with missing numbers. Introduce your class to problems with the equals sign at the beginning of the statement, and consider how to solve them.
