Let’s tell the time to half past the hour - The Complete Series (5 lessons)

Teach your Year 1 class to tell the time to half past the hour using this complete set of five lessons. The children will have the opportunity to discuss the different times of day as well as beginning to investigate the hands and face of an analogue clock. Morning, Afternoon and Evening

Remind your children of how they can use language to describe events and activities in the day. Teach them the names for different parts of the day, including morning, afternoon, evening and night. What activities do the children do at these times of day?

Help remind your class to read and say any o’clock time whilst exploring in more detail how the hour hand moves and looks for each time. They have the opportunity to play games or make their own o’clock clock to help them identify these times.

Introduce your Year 1 class to the concept of telling time to the nearest half hour by focusing on the hour hand and its position as it shows half past the hour. Give them the opportunity to read, say and label times or play an active game as they match the times.

Drawing the time

Introduce your class to the tricky concept of drawing the hands on a clock face. Guide them through the placement of each hand and use supporting printable resources to help and challenge them with drawing the time.

Give your class the opportunity to show off what they have learnt about telling the time to half past the hour as they play games based around o’clock and half past times. Alternatively they can practise and improve their speaking skills as they attempt to describe times to their partner to draw and guess.
