Rumble in the Jungle - The Complete Series (7 lessons)

In this sequence of 7 lessons, children will begin by becoming experts on a jungle animal of their choice. They will use the high-quality fact files included in the pack to research their animal before sharing what they have found out with their classmates. They will then read the book 'Rumble in the Jungle' and will explore ways to perform the animal poetry in a confident and engaging way. The following lesson introduces children to rhyming words and your Year 2 class will identify pairs of rhyming words in the poem. They then go on to analyse the syllable structure of the poem and will be taught how to write effective similes. Bringing all of this together, at the end of the unit children will have the confidence to plan, write and perform their own new verse for Rumble in the Jungle.

In this Researching Jungle Animals Year 2 lesson pack, inspired by 'Rumble in the Jungle', children will firstly use extracts from a non-fiction text about zebras to decide if statements are true or false.

Using the engaging slideshow which comes as part of this pack, your Year 2 class will then learn how to use mind-mapping to research a jungle animal of their choice. A range of high-quality fact files on various jungle animals is included to support children finding out lots of interesting information. Alternatively, you might choose to pin up the set of fact cards, which are also included, around the class or playground for children to do their research in a more active way!

At the end of the lesson, children will learn to use a range of sentence starters to tell a partner what they have found out about their chosen jungle animal.

In this Performing a Poem Year 2 lesson pack, inspired by 'Rumble in the Jungle', children will begin by learning how apostrophes can be used to show omission.

Using the engaging slideshow which comes as part of this pack, your Year 2 class will then learn some techniques to perform a poem effectively. They will work with a partner to prepare a performance of a verse from 'Rumble in the Jungle'. Performance help cards and challenge cards will support all children in your class to achieve success!

At the end of this exciting lesson, the slideshow becomes the backdrop to the jungle stage! Children will come up and perform their rehearsed verse in front of their class. They will be supported in evaluating their own and each other's performances.

In this Rhyming Words Year 2 lesson pack, inspired by 'Rumble in the Jungle', children will firstly match up pairs of jungle words which rhyme.

Your Year 2 class will then analyse the first two verses of 'Rumble in the Jungle' for patterns in rhyme. They will learn how the poem follows a regular rhyming pattern. They will listen to the rest of the poem and note down rhyming words they hear. In the main part of the lesson the children will then see if they can complete lines with missing words so that they rhyme. Higher-ability children are challenged to rearrange jumbled up verses so that they correctly follow the rhyming pattern of 'Rumble in the Jungle'.

At the end of the lesson, children will look at a jumbled up verse from the book 'Commotion in the Ocean' which was also written by Giles Andreae. Can they apply what they have learned to put the verse back in the correct order again?

In this Exploring Syllable Patterns Year 2 lesson pack, inspired by 'Rumble in the Jungle', children will start by playing a game of four-in-a-row to revise rhyming words.

Using the slideshow that comes as part of this pack, the friendly jungle animal characters will help introduce your Year 2 class to syllables. They will see if they can identify the number of syllables in various jungle-themed words. Then, they will analyse the syllable structure of 'Rumble in the Jungle'.

At the end of a busy lesson investigating, children will come back together to share what they have found out.

In this Using Similes lesson, based on 'Rumble in the Jungle', children will begin by generating verbs for various jungle animals. These will be really useful when the children come to plan and write their own new verse for the poem later in the unit.

Using the engaging slideshow included as part of this pack, children will then be introduced to what a simile is. They will learn how to write a simile and will practise forming them in a range of fun activities. They will then have a go at writing their own similes for various jungle animals. Instead, why not try the alternative activity included in which children use similes to write their own riddles for their classmates to try and guess!

This lesson finishes with children trying to match simile starters to the correct ending.

In this Planning a Poem lesson, based on 'Rumble in the Jungle', children will begin by recapping on what a syllable is. They will play a fun matching game in which they must try and find the pairs of jungle animals and the correct number of syllables.

Then, your Year 2 class will practise using the structure of verses in 'Rumble in the Jungle' to plan their own new version. The helpful slideshow, which is included in this pack, supports children in following the syllable structure and rhyming pattern of the original.

Once children have had a go at writing their own verses, they will reflect on their learning in the lesson and share successes they have had.

In the final lesson of this scheme, children will edit and improve their favourite verse from lesson six.

Your Year 2 class will then use the colourful writing frame, included as part of this pack, to write out their verse in their neatest writing. These would form a delightful display or perhaps you could create a class book to put in you class library.

At the end of the lesson, children will work with a partner to prepare a performance of their verses. The helpful slideshow, included in this pack, will support children in coming up with some creative performance techniques. They will then come up once again to the jungle Stage and will perform their verses in pairs to the rest of the class. What a wonderful way to celebrate their learning and finish this scheme of work based on Rumble in the Jungle.
