Use this Ruby Bridges lesson to introduce your KS1 class to the amazingly brave six-year-old little girl, who paved the way for the desegregation of schools in 1960s America.

You might also be interested in our Year 1 English scheme of work, 'Coming to England', based on Floella Benjamin's wonderful book, which tells the story of how as a child, she arrived in England as part of the Windrush Generation.

Your children will briefly learn about what segregation meant for black and white people in America, before finding out about Ruby's first day at school, and the momentous changes this seemingly normal act put into motion.

In the activities provided, children are asked to put themselves into Ruby's shoes, and imagine how she might have felt at different times. In the alternative task provided, children will explore the experience of segregation in a group activity.
