What should children learn in Year 2 Maths?

In Year 2 Maths, children build on the foundations developed in Year 1 by working more confidently with number, developing efficient calculation strategies and extending their understanding of multiplication, division and fractions. Alongside these Year 2 Maths objectives, children explore measurement, money, time, shape, position and statistics, with plenty of opportunities to use practical resources, solve problems, spot patterns and explain their mathematical thinking.

01

Develop number and calculation skills

Help children develop a secure understanding of numbers to 100, including place value, comparing and ordering numbers, number patterns and using number facts confidently. Children should develop strategies for addition and subtraction and build their understanding of multiplication and division through grouping, sharing, repeated addition and learning the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

02

Build confidence with fractions

Develop children's understanding of fractions by finding and recognising halves, quarters, thirds and other simple fractions of shapes, quantities and numbers. Give children opportunities to explore equivalent fractions, connect fractions with sharing and division, and use their understanding to solve simple practical problems.

03

Explore measurement, time and money

Give children practical opportunities to measure and compare length, mass, capacity and temperature using appropriate standard units. Children should work with pounds and pence, solve simple problems involving money, and develop greater confidence telling and comparing time using hours, minutes, quarter past, quarter to and five-minute intervals.

04

Explore geometry, statistics and reasoning

Help children identify and describe the properties of common 2D and 3D shapes and develop their understanding of position, direction and movement. Introduce simple tables, charts, pictograms and graphs, and encourage children across all areas of Year 2 Maths to make connections, recognise patterns, solve problems and explain how they reached an answer.
