What should children learn in Year 3 Maths?
In Year 3 Maths, children build on their KS1 learning as they begin to work with larger numbers, develop more efficient calculation methods and extend their understanding of multiplication, division and fractions. Alongside these Year 3 Maths objectives, children develop their skills across measurement, time, shape, position and statistics, with increasing opportunities to reason mathematically, solve problems and explain the methods they use.
Develop number and calculation skills
Help children develop a secure understanding of numbers to 1000, including place value, comparing and ordering numbers, estimating and rounding. Children should build confidence with mental and written methods for addition and subtraction, recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 times tables, and apply their calculation skills to a growing range of mathematical problems.
Develop understanding of fractions
Extend children's understanding of fractions by exploring unit and non-unit fractions of shapes, quantities and numbers. Children should recognise and use equivalent fractions, compare and order simple fractions, add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and begin to connect fractions with division and their wider understanding of number.
Explore measurement, time and money
Develop children's ability to measure, compare, add and subtract lengths, mass and capacity using appropriate standard units. Children should become increasingly confident telling and recording time, including using Roman numerals and the 12- and 24-hour clock, and solve practical problems involving measures and money, including giving change.
Explore geometry, statistics and reasoning
Help children investigate the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, recognise right angles and compare different types of angles, and develop their understanding of position and space. Children should also interpret and present data using tables, pictograms and bar charts, while applying reasoning and problem-solving skills across all areas of Year 3 Maths.
