Reading Comprehension Year 4

Reading comprehension is a crucial skill that helps Year 4 pupils unlock a deeper understanding of texts. According to the National Curriculum for England, Year 4 students are expected to develop fluency, expand their vocabulary, and engage with a variety of texts, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.

The National Curriculum Expectations for Year 4 Reading Comprehension

In Year 4, the National Curriculum emphasises the following key objectives for reading comprehension:

  • Understanding Vocabulary: Pupils should use context to infer the meaning of new words and be able to explain their meanings.
  • Retrieval and Summarisation: They should retrieve key details and summarise the main ideas of a text.
  • Inference Skills: Pupils should infer characters’ feelings, thoughts, and motives and justify their inferences with evidence.
  • Identifying Themes and Conventions: Children should identify themes and conventions in texts, linking them to others they have read.
  • Evaluating Texts: Pupils should discuss texts critically, expressing their views with reasoning.
