This Complete Series includes five sets of plans, presentations and printable resources dedicated to: finding equivalent fractions (including simplifying fractions); converting fractions to decimals; converting decimals to fractions; sorting, ordering and comparing fractions; and multiplying decimal numbers.

Find Equivalent Fractions

This lesson’s input starts by recapping how percentages may be converted into fractions. After that, a number of methods for finding equivalent fractions are shown, including doubling or halving, multiplying, dividing, and finding common factors of a fraction’s numerator and denominator. After that there’s a choice of activities where children may either practise and develop the skills they’ve learnt, or apply their learning to a ‘real world’ scenario where they must make data more meaningful for an audience by converting or simplifying fractions and percentages.

Convert Fractions to Decimals

To start things off, take a look at the underlying principals of converting fractions to decimals by mentally converting tenths, hundredths and thousandths fractions to decimals using place value knowledge.

After that, learn a short division method for converting any fraction to a decimal number. The most challenging aspect of this method is clearly explained: how to round long decimal numbers (including recurring numbers) to one, two or three decimal places.

As with all five of the lessons in this Complete Series, there’s a choice of differentiated activities where children may practise and apply the skills they’ve learnt.

Convert Decimals to Fractions

The presentation included with this lesson clearly explains a method for converting decimal numbers (less than one) to fractions by multiplying them by ten, a hundred or a thousand. Questions are then shown so that children may immediately practise what they’ve learnt, going on to simplify the fractions they find – where it is possible, or appropriate, to do so. After that, there’s a choice of differentiated activities where they may either solve a variety of conversion calculations or design and test a decimal number conversion game of their own.

Comparing and Converting

Referring back to skills taught and learnt in lessons 1–3 of this Complete Series, the slides challenge children to recall and explain a variety of methods for converting and comparing fractions, decimals and percentages. After that there’s a choice of differentiated, engaging activities where children may either undertake a quiz where they choose the most appropriate degree of challenge for themselves, or convert, sort, order and present fractions, decimals and percentages using a variety of graphs, diagrams and tables.

Multiplying Decimal Numbers

Teach children a reliable method for multiplying numbers with decimal places by combining previously learnt skills: using place value knowledge, times tables knowledge and formal written multiplication. The included slides briefly touch upon the idea that this method may be used to calculate multiples of numbers with any amount of decimal places, too.

After that, there’s a choice of activities, including differentiated worksheets with a variety of multiplication calculations, and a practical Maths challenge.
