Key Stage 1MeasurementMathsSummer TermYear 1

This Year 1 Maths scheme of work, structured around the National Curriculum Measure strand, will see your class using mathematical language and skills to compare objects. The first lesson focuses on your class measuring the length and height of objects by comparison and using non-standard units. The second lesson challenges your class to use rulers to accurately measure objects. During the third lesson your class will go on to measure volume and capacity of containers. The fourth lesson sees them work out and compare the mass of different objects. The series concludes with a practical investigation lesson where your class can demonstrate their knowledge and skills.

#TheCompleteSeries5lessons

Each of the five lessons within this KS1 measurement scheme of work comes with a clear lesson plan, a slideshow for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources.

#Lesson1Comparinglengthsandheights

During this first measure lesson your class will use the language of length and height to compare objects by direct comparison. They will compare and describe the objects using the language of longer, shorter and taller. Then they will compare by direct comparison and then use non-standard units to compare the objects in greater detail.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Worksheets
  • Length Challenge Cards
  • Height Challenge Cards
  • Photo Sheet
#Lesson2Usingaruler

This lesson will teach your class how to use a ruler to find the height or length of an object. They will use their measuring skills to solve problems, for example finding something that is longer, shorter, taller than a given length.

#Lesson3Findingthemassofobjects

The third lesson in this series will get the children using scales to compare the mass of objects. They will use balance scales to directly compare the mass of two objects as well as digital and analogue scales to find the mass of objects. This lesson will challenge your class to read numbers on a scale to help them solve problems.

#Lesson4Exploringvolumeandcapacity

Solve volume and capacity problems and use mathematical language to describe how full different containers are in the penultimate measure lesson in this ‘Let’s measure’ series of lessons for Year 1. Your class will use vocabulary including full, half full, empty, three quarters full and a quarter full.

#Lesson5Measureproblemsolving

The final lesson in this Measure scheme of work will challenge your class to solve a variety of problems involving measure. They will be given problems focused on length, height, mass, weight, volume and capacity and be challenged to select the right equipment to help them work out the answer. This fun lesson consolidates your class’s understanding of measure with ready-to-teach resources.
