This My Body lesson pack is ideal for teaching your Year 1 class all about parts of the human body and their functions, as well as the five senses. It's been created by experienced primary teachers to ensure excellent coverage of the 'animals including humans' National Curriculum objectives about the human body.

Lesson 1

Body Parts

The first lesson in this series gives your class plenty of opportunities to name and identify different parts of their bodies, from the tops of their heads to the tips of their toes and everything in between, all through a variety of fun activities.

Lesson 2

Busy Bodies

This lesson starts with an activity to identify body parts through covered images before looking at which parts of our bodies we use for different activities, such as walking, hopping, reading, and many more.

During the differentiated learning activities, pupils will explore their ideas about the human body and how it moves in greater depth during a choice of fun, practical activities.

Lesson 3

Seeing Eyes

This lesson introduces your class to the five senses before looking in more detail at the sense of sight. As they continue to identify the basic parts of the body, children will think about eyes, and what our sense of sight allows us to do. They'll also consider why sight can be an important sense to help them stay safe.

During the choice of sense of sight activities, children may either use their own sense of sight to look carefully at pictures, or apply their skills of observation to find a range of objects.

Lesson 4

Touching Hands

After recapping what the five different senses are, your class will explore the sense of touch. They will learn how their whole bodies can experience touch but that it is our hands that are most used to feel objects for a variety of different purposes. They will also use appropriate vocabulary to describe the properties of different materials based on how they feel.

Smelling Noses

This lesson looks at the sense of smell and encourages your class to think about what we use this important sense for. There is also the opportunity to find out lots of interesting facts about smell and noses, as well as identifying objects by their smell.

Tasting Tongues

This delicious lesson explores the sense of taste and encourages your class to think of words that describe a variety of flavours, including sweet, salty, bitter and sour. They can then discuss which flavours they like most and least, as well as taste test some different foods to explore their flavours.

Hearing Ears

The final lesson in this parts of the body KS1 Science unit of work starts by recapping four of the senses children have previously learnt about. It then goes on to explore the sense of hearing. After considering why the sense of hearing is important, your children can take a fun sound test to see if they can identify different sounds, as well as seeing if they can identify their classmates from the sound of their voice. There is also an opportunity to recap each of the five senses to consolidate what they have learnt about their bodies.
