#Lesson1NonchronologicalReportFeatures

In this first 'Features of a Non-chronological Report' lesson, children are introduced to Bert, a 'dragonologist', who needs help to write a non-chronological report about a particular dragon.

After discussing the features of this genre of writing, children will complete a diamond activity to show their opinions of the importance of each feature. In their independent activities, they will read Bert's report, identifying and creating a key for the features he has used. In the plenary, children are all given a different 'dragon egg' to look after...!

#Lesson2GeneratingQuestions

In this lesson, children will be encouraged to think about what questions they might ask to find out more information about their as yet unhatched dragon!

Together, children will look at some questions that could be asked about the different aspects of a dragon and its life. In their independent activities, children will further generate and record the questions they think are important to ask.

#Lesson3MakingandOrganisingNotes

The dragon eggs are hatching!

In this lesson, children will use their imagination skills to write answers to the questions about their dragons that they generated in the previous lesson. As a class, they will be reminded of how to record information in note form, as well as playing a short game focusing on the use of technical language, before independently organising their information into a plan for a non-chronological report.

Including all the printable resources you will need, this lesson is ready-to-teach with a detailed plan, differentiated activities and a slide show.

#Lesson4ContentFeatures

In this lesson, your class will focus on the content features of a non-chronological report as they write their first draft.

As a class, your children will focus on how to make their writing interesting and engaging for the reader, by using varied sentence starters, carefully chosen adjectives, and conjunctions to link ideas. They will then apply these skills when beginning to write their non-chronological report.

#Lesson5EditingandImproving

In this lesson, children will discuss the importance of editing their writing.

First, your class will work together to discuss improvements for a variety of different given sentences, before applying this skill to their own draft paragraphs from the previous lesson. In their independent activities, children analyse and edit their own work, or if you choose the FSD? option, they read and make suggestions for improvement to their peers' writing.

Differentiated activity sheets, a detailed plan, and a set of slides for the teaching input are all included in this lesson pack.

#Lesson6LayoutFeatures

In this final lesson, your class will focus on the layout features of a non-chronological report as they present a final copy of their work.

Children will discuss the role that layout features have in the presentation of their non-chronological reports, such as the heading, sub-headings, paragraph order and placement, images, captions, and fact boxes. They are encouraged to think carefully about the layout of their own reports as they are creating their final copies. As a class, their completed work will take the form of a Dragon Directory.
