Identifying Large Numbers

The first lesson in this series starts by helping children to identify the value of each digit in numbers with up to seven digits. They will have some practise at writing numbers in both words and digits, as well as decomposing numbers to help identify the value of each digit. There’s lots going on in this lesson but it will all help secure their understanding of larger numbers!

Comparing Numbers

Now that your class can identify the value of different five- and six-digit numbers, they can start comparing and ordering them! The slides start by looking at the populations of some different UK cities, identifying which have the highest and lowest populations and using the < and > symbols to show this. The main activities provide a fun game that will set children competing to get the highest numbers, and there are lots of challenges the children can tackle too!

Rounding Numbers

The slides for this lesson teach your class how to round numbers up to a million to a given degree of accuracy. The slides go through the process for how to round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand and hundred thousand, giving them opportunities to practise this with a variety of numbers with up to six digits. The can then practise this for themselves during their independent learning or create a rounding quiz to test a friend with!

Reading Roman Numerals

This lesson starts by identifying some of the ways in which Roman numerals are used today, before recapping how the Roman numeral system works. The slides guide your class through how to read increasingly challenging Roman numerals before giving the chance to both read and write Roman numerals for themselves.

Roman Numeral Years

This engaging lesson gives your class the chance to practise reading Roman numerals before looking at years expressed as Roman numerals. Children will identify the birth year of a variety of familiar faces from Guy Fawkes to Lady Gaga, or identify what year various famous films were released. Either way, these fun activities are sure to get them reading Roman numeral years in no time!
