#TheCompleteSeries5lessons

With detailed lesson plans, engaging slides, activity ideas, differentiated worksheets and many other helpful resources, this 'Fractions and Proportion' scheme of work provides all you need for a high-quality week of Maths teaching (for only a fraction of the effort!).

#Lesson1VisualEquivalents

The first lesson in this series starts by recapping exactly what a fraction is before exploring equivalent fractions expressed visually using diagrams and fraction walls. The main activity then challenges them match equivalent fraction diagrams or use the ‘greater than’, ‘less than’ and ‘equals’ signs to make fraction statement correct, using a fraction wall to help them. The fun alternative activity will ask them questions such as whether they would prefer to eat two thirds or seven twelfths of a bag of chocolate buttons, explaining their answer!

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Matching cards
  • Fraction sorting cards
  • Worksheet
  • ‘Would you rather?’ cards
  • Fraction wall sheet
#Lesson2FindingEquivalents

This lesson moves on from using visual representations to find equivalent fractions to teaching your class how to use the relationship between numerators and denominators to find equivalent fractions. They will find out how to multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number to create equivalent fractions, the slides and main activities giving plenty of engaging ways to practise this. There is also fun game for the alternative activity that will really encourage them to use their multiplication skills to find the most obscure equivalent fractions possible!

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Fraction cards
#Lesson3ImproperFractions

This lesson moves on to start looking at how to convert improper fractions to mixed number fractions, and vice versa. The slides start with some simple examples, using diagrams to support their understanding, before moving on to more challenging examples. There are plenty of opportunities for them to hone their skills during their independent learning activities, including a dominos matching activity and a simple game.

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Worksheet
  • Domino cards
#Lesson4AddingandSubtractingFractions

Your class will learn how to add and subtract fractions with common denominators in this lesson. Starting with simple examples, children will learn how to convert their answers into mixed number fractions if necessary, before moving on to exploring how to convert mixed numbers in addition and subtraction statements into improper fractions to make them easier to add or subtract.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Challenge cards
  • Spinner sheet
#Lesson5OrderingFractions

Your children will need their wits about them during this challenging lesson as they learn how to order sets of proper, improper and mixed number fractions! They will consider the best way to convert any fractions to make comparing and ordering easier, drawing upon everything they have learnt about fractions during the week. The main activities provide differentiated problems to solve, as well as some tricky ‘true or false’ problems.
