With a mixture of written calculations, number problems, and single and multi-step word problems, children will have plenty of opportunities to select the correct operation to solve a given problem and understand how to express their working out in a single calculation with brackets.
With five easy-to-follow lesson plans, slideshows for the teaching inputs, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable activities, these 'Let's Calculate' lessons provide everything you need to deliver a full week of Maths teaching to make your class feel confident in solving a varity of calculations.
Using Brackets
In this first lesson, children will start to explore the function of brackets in a calculation and start to solve calculations involving one set of brackets. They will be encouraged to solve such problems mentally whenever they can. They will also read and understand a two-step word problem, expressing the problem as a single calculation involving brackets. There is also the opportunity to see how many different ways they can find to find the answer to a calculation where the answer is given.
