#TheCompleteSeries5lessons
In these lessons, there are loads of opportunities for children to build on their growing knowledge of the properties of shape and practise the skills needed to sort, compare, measure and draw them. There's also lots of information about symmetry both inside shapes and outside them, with opportunities for children to practise drawing symmetrical shapes and patterns as well as measuring and checking lines of symmetry.
These downloadable lessons each include a detailed plan with a choice of differentiated learning activities, a slideshow presentation and a range of printable resources.
#Lesson1Comparing2DShapes
This lesson will get your class confidently comparing 2D shapes. The lesson begins with a recap of the names of a variety of quadrilaterals, then your class will look in more detail at some ways in which they can be defined and compared according to their properties. In this lesson, there's opportunities for children to measure and compare shapes with increasing accuracy as well as to draw compound shapes, identifying some polygons of which they are comprised.
This downloadable lesson contains a lesson plan, slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.
What's included:
- Lesson plan
- Slides
- Activity ideas
- Differentiated worksheets
- 2-D shape word mat
#Lesson2AnglesInShapes
During this Angles in Shapes Maths lesson your class will begin by measuring and comparing two or more angles on a line. They will take a closer look at the angles found inside 2D shapes. Then you have the option of accessing activities where children find, identify, measure and compare angles found inside shapes or on a variety of objects.
This downloadable lesson includes a detailed lesson plan, slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.
What's included:
- Lesson plan
- Slides
- Activity ideas
- Differentiated worksheets
- 2-D shapes poster/ table mat
- Angle hunt results sheet
#Lesson3SymmetryIn2DShapes
Can your children find lines of symmetry in 2D shapes? The included slides with this lesson explain some ways in which horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines of symmetry inside shapes can be identified and checked. Children may then apply this learning to the creation of their own, complex, compound shapes and patterns - all of which will have a line of symmetry.
This downloadable lesson contains a lesson plan, slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.
What's included:
- Lesson plan
- Slides
- Activity ideas
- Differentiated worksheets
#Lesson4LinesOfSymmetry
What is a line of symmetry? Take a closer look at symmetry, by identifying ways in shapes, pictures and patterns can be reflected across mirror lines which are not only bisecting them, but adjacent to them or not even touching them! During either of the two included activities, children may then identify lines of symmetry for given patterns, or create their own increasingly complex patterns with lines of symmetry.
This downloadable lesson contains a lesson plan, a slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.
What's included:
- Lesson plan
- Slides
- Activity ideas
- Differentiated worksheets
- Tangram sheet
#Lesson5CompletingSymmetricalFigures
This, the the fifth lesson in this scheme of work which focuses on symmetry, challenges children to identify ways in which a shape or a pattern can be reflected more than once across more than one line of symmetry. The included slides show clearly how this may be done, and children may practise the skills demonstrated during either of the suggested learning activities.
This downloadable lesson contains a lesson plan, a slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.

- Lesson plan
- Slides
- Activity ideas
- Differentiated worksheets
