In this sequence of six lessons, your KS2 class will begin by locating South Africa on a world map and learn about how its position near the Tropic of Capricorn influences its climate. They use maps with keys to identify South Africa's nine provinces and major cities. They then go on to learn about South Africa's human geography, becoming experts in either trade and industry, agriculture and farming, food in South Africa or facts and figures about the country. Your KS2 class will then look at the physical geography of the country and learn about features such as the plateaus which cover much of the country, the Drakensberg mountain range or South Africa's stunning coastline. Children will then move on to compare school in South Africa to the UK before then exploring the vibrant city of Cape Town. Your KS2 class will become tour guides, taking their classmates on a tour to an area of the city they have researched. The end of the unit focusses on the drought which hit Cape Town in 2018 and what the city's residents did to save water as the city came close to running out of this precious resource.
