#TheCompleteSeries5lessons

With lesson plans, whole-class slideshow presentations, differentiated activities and a range of printable worksheets, games and other resources, this KS2 ‘Decimals and Fractions’ scheme of work is completely ready to teach and enjoy in the classroom.

#Lesson1MatchesandEquivalents

This scheme of work starts off by thinking of different ways of expressing the shaded proportion of a shape using fractions and decimals. Children will then go on to recap the value of each digit in numbers with three decimal places, and the difference between proper, improper and mixed number fractions. They are then challenged to find equivalents between decimals and fractions in a variety of forms, and how to convert from one to the other.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Worksheet
  • Differentiated proportion cards
  • Game boards
  • Game cards
#Lesson2ComparingandOrdering

This lesson starts recapping the difference between a numerator and a denominator before exploring how your class can compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number. Starting with comparing two fractions, they will then challenge themselves further once they are secure with this by ordering sets of fractions that all have different denominators.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Differentiated fraction cards
#Lesson3AddingandSubtracting

Now that your class can convert fractions so that they have a common denominator, they will explore how they can add and subtract fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number. They will also be challenged to convert any answers that are improper fractions into mixed number fractions.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Worksheet
  • Differentiated challenge cards
  • Differentiated fraction chains
#Lesson4MultiplyingbyWholeNumbers

Moving on to multiplication, this lesson looks at how proper fractions can be multiplied by whole numbers. Your class will start by using diagrams to help them grasp the concept before moving on to converting the whole number to a fraction and multiplying the numerator by the numerator and the denominator by the denominator. They are also challenged to convert any answers that are improper fractions into mixed number fractions.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Differentiated game cards
  • Game board
#Lesson5MultiplyingMixedNumbers

In the final lesson of this series, children will recap how to multiply a proper fraction by a whole number before looking at how they can multiply a mixed number fraction by a whole number. They will do this by converting the mixed number into an improper fraction. With increasingly challenging calculations, children can apply this to real-life problems and recap their learning throughout the week in a fun game to round off the week’s learning.
