Throughout this five-lesson scheme of work, your Year 1 children will become more familiar with the values of different coins, learn to match groups of coins to totals and use coins in a variety of different scenarios.
With lesson plans, slideshow presentations for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources, these KS1 money lessons provide everything you need to deliver five fun Maths lessons!
In the first money maths lessons of this scheme of work your class will be reminded of the values of different coins. They will then work out the total of sets of coins, and match them to products costing the same amount.
The second lesson in this series of money lessons challenges your class to select coins to make a given total, and then select groups of objects they can buy with a set amount of money. Your class will become familiar with using different combinations of coins to make given totals. They will be encouraged to use their number facts when solving the problems.
During this ‘Let’s make totals using coins’ lesson your class will decide what they would like to buy with a set amount of money. There are multiple combinations of products they could buy, to encourage them to think about number facts as they solve problems. They will problem solve as different characters introduce different criteria to their spending.
The penultimate lesson of this money scheme of work for Year 1 focuses on making totals using coins. Your class will make totals using coins, and begin to represent them as number sentences. They will develop their problem-solving skills as they work out which coins they can use to make totals. Your class will explore different ways of making a total.
The final lesson in this ‘Let’s make totals using coins’ scheme of work develops your class’s confidence with money when they go shopping. They will think about how much a group of items costs, and work out what they can purchase with their money. This lesson concludes with a money quiz.
