They will be presented with a variety of problems and challenges to solve, using their understanding of different methods, particularly formal long multiplication and short division.

#TheCompleteSeries5lessons

With lesson plans, slides, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources, these ‘Practising Multiplication and Division’ lessons contain everything you need for a whole week of fantastic Maths teaching.

#Lesson1MissingNumbers

The first lesson in this series challenges your class to solve some missing number multiplication and division calculations. They are encouraged to think about which different methods they could use and which would be most appropriate for the task at hand. They are also challenged to find the highest and lowest possible answers by rearranging given digits into multiplication and division statements. Plenty to keep them occupied for the whole lesson!

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Worksheet
  • Differentiated challenge cards

#Lesson2LongMultiplication

The second lesson in this series recaps the formal method of long multiplication. During the teaching input, your children will have plenty of opportunities to practise this method before being challenged to solve some calculations where the numbers have been replaced by letters! Children will need to engage their problem-solving abilities as they tackle a variety of problems that encourage them to use long multiplication in fun ways.

#Lesson3ShortDivision

Division is the focus of this lesson as your class are reminded of the method for short division. After practising dividing increasingly large numbers by a single digit, they are introduced to how to use this method to divide by two-digit numbers. There are then some fun puzzles and challenges to complete to help them practise short division for themselves, including working out the dates of important historical events by completing division calculations.

The slides for the teaching input start by challenging them to spot patterns in the 11 times table beyond 11x12. It then teaches them a handy trick that will allow them to multiply any number by 11 quickly and easily.

#Lesson5PlanetProblems

The final lesson in this series challenges your class to use their understanding of multiplication and division to solve problems relating to the distances in light years between fictional planets. They will start by filling in gaps in a distance chart as a class before tackling a variety of similar problems independently. They are encouraged not only to solve the problems but to consider which method would be most appropriate and how they can check that their answers are correct.
