In these Year 1 money Maths lessons, childre will take a close look at British coins. They will identify what makes each coin distinct, what the value of each coin is and what the coins are used for. 'Can you recognise coins?' is a five-lesson KS1 unit of work for Year 1 with detailed planning, slides, money worksheets, activities and games.
During the week's worth of teaching and learning, your Year 1 children will learn how to distinguish between the different coins, order coins from smallest to largest and match coins to price labels.
What are coins?
What’s the difference between 1p and 2p? How are coins similar and how are they different? Explore the eight different British coins and their values with your class. Encourage the children to recognise coins by their size, shape, colour and amount to then enjoy activities such as hunting for coins in slime and recognising partially hidden coins in purses.

A pile of coins
Help! All the coins have been muddled up! Encourage your class to sort and circle the coins into groups. Your class will also listen to descriptions of hidden coins and match the correct coin to its description.

Piggy banks
Your class will sort the muddled up coins into their correct piggy banks in this practical Year 1 money lesson. They will order a mixture of coins by smallest value to largest and vice versa. Your class will also have the opportunity to match coin descriptions using a coin fan as well as have fun playing coin snap.

Spot the most
During this lesson your class will be encouraged to spot the most common coin inside a piggy bank. They will then use a coin fan to correctly identify the most common coin. The children will also be introduced to price labels and reminded of the pound and pence symbols. They will practise recognising price labels and matching them to their correct coin by playing a fun shopping trolley bingo game.

A trip to the market
The last lesson in this series encourages your class to recognise labels and match them to their correct coin. They will have lots of opportunities to use the skills they have acquired in the previous lessons, through ordering coins, matching coins, hunting for coins as well as having lots of fun playing a farm shop game.
