Help your class with their understanding of the value of coins with this engaging scheme of work for Year 1. Encourage the children to make the same amounts in different ways through solving problems, recognition games and challenging activities. As well as consolidate their understanding of which coin is which and what the coins are used for.

Each of these five lessons contains a lesson plan, an engaging slideshow for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources to support children as they become more familiar with coins and what coins are used for.

Same Value

This first lesson in the series recaps the eight different British coins and their values. The slides for the teaching input introduce the children to the concept of combining the value of different coins to make a new total. The children will explore ways to make 2p, 5p and 10p with different coins.

The Magic Piggy Bank

Now that your class are beginning to become familiar with the value of coins, they will enjoy reinforcing their understanding through the magic piggy bank visual slides. The children will watch as one coin goes into the piggy bank and several reappear. The children will need to decide how many coins will appear that have the same value as the original coin.

Treasure Chest

Ahoy there me hearties! Your class will enjoy testing their understanding of what value is by searching through items that have the same value as 1p to 20p coins. They will explore different values through coins, price labels and written amounts.

The Exchanging Vending Machine

Now that your class are beginning to master what the value of coins are, they will be challenged to read price labels, check their given amount is correct, search for the correct amount and exchange them if they need to.

At the Toy Shop

The children will enjoy a hands-on activity of buying toys from a toy shop. The children will need to work out the amount they have been given and correctly select a toy that has a price label with the exact amount.
