From reasoning and problem-solving to fluency practice, each lesson helps children develop mathematical understanding in engaging, hands-on ways that make learning stick.
These lessons are a great way to learn names of 2D shapes and kick off your Year 1 class's learning about the properties of shape. The lessons start by encouraging children to think carefully about the differences between 2-D and 3-D shapes, they'll go on to learn about simple polygons, circles and semicircles. The included activities and printable resources, get your class sorting, drawing and making shapes, all the while building up a bank of mathematical vocabulary they can use to describe shape with increasing confidence.
Each of the five lessons in this scheme of work includes a detailed plan with a choice of differentiated activities, colourful and engaging slides, worksheets and a range of other printable resources.
2-D or 3-D? Part 1
This lesson answers the question 'What is a 2D shape?'. Your class will discover what the difference between 2-D and 3-D shapes is as they explore shapes. The lesson includes a downloadable slide show presentation which explain in simple terms the difference between polygons and shapes with curved edges. During this teaching input there are a number of opportunities for children to respond to questions and challenges, practising the skills they are developing. Following this, challenge your class to attempt one of the four included activities.
This downloadable lesson includes a detailed lesson plan, slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.
What's included:
- Lesson plan
- Slides
- Activity ideas
- Photo sheet
- Printable shape cards
2-D or 3-D? Part 2
In this 2D shapes Year 1 Maths lesson, your children get the chance to recap and consolidate their learning through a series of quick questions and activities shown on the included slides. Following the teaching input your class will build on their prior knowledge by demonstrating how simple polygons such as triangles or rectangles can be sorted into groups.
This downloadable lesson contains a lesson plan, slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.
What's included:

Rectangles, triangles and circles - Part 1
What is a rectangle? How are squares and oblongs different? This lesson challenges your class to identify the rectangles in a group of shapes and to use mathematical language to describe triangles. Your class will build up their knowledge, skills and understanding of the properties of simple 2-D shapes.
This downloadable lesson includes a lesson plan, slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.

Rectangles, triangles and circles - Part 2
Build on children’s learning in the previous lesson and answer the question 'What is a circle?'. Your class will explore and describe the properties of rectangles, triangles, circles and semicircles. The detailed, engaging slides include several opportunities for children to practise and apply their learning during your teaching input. Following this, get your children making and sorting shapes during one of the four differentiated, practical learning activities.
This downloadable lesson includes a lesson plan, a slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.

Making patterns
Make 2D shape pictures during the final lesson in the series and focus on a exploring the properties of shape by making pictures and patterns. The included slides show how several triangles or rectangles can be arranged to make bigger, composite shapes, as well as how polygons can be arranged to make gapless, tessellating patterns.
