This Year 2 problem-solving Maths scheme of work is all about problem-solving. During the five included lessons, your pupils will be challenged to use and apply their knowledge and understanding of addition and subtraction methods as they tackle a variety of simple maths problems. They'll use number bonds to 100, bar models and their developing maths reasoning skills to find the answers to a range of puzzles, games and other, differentiated, activities.
Each lesson (just like all PlanBee Maths lessons) includes a detailed plan, a slideshow which clearly explains maths methods and poses challenging questions, a choice of differentiated activities and a range of printable resources such as problem-solving games, worksheets and puzzles.
Tarsia Puzzles, Target Numbers
Find as many ways as possible to make a target number using number bonds.
In this lesson, children are challenged to demonstrate their developing addition and subtraction skills as they work out how to piece together a Tarsia puzzle. The puzzle pieces require them to find as many ways as possible of making given target numbers.

How can we split numbers?
Investigate the different ways that we can split numbers using addition facts and number bonds.
In this, the second of five lessons in 'Let's Solve Problems' for Year 2, children will explore how numbers can be split into two or more groups to make a larger number. They'll use their knowledge of number bonds and addition facts to help them do this, and they'll go on to consider how the groups they make relate to the parts of simple addition number sentences.

In this lesson, revisit what bar models are, and show your class how to use them in different ways to represent addition problems. The included slides show children how to use bar models to derive addition calculations, find their inverse subtraction calculations, and solve a variety of simple problems.

Solve subtraction calculations and word problems using bar models.
Building on what children have learnt during the previous lesson in 'Let's Solve Problems', show your class how bar models can be used to represent subtraction word problems. The included slides demonstrate how to use this practical problem-solving strategy as well as posing questions for children to solve using bar models, too.
During either of the included learning activities, your pupils will practise the skills they have learnt during the teaching input as they solve a variety of subtraction word problems and calculations shown on the included worksheets and other printable resources.

Challenge children to demonstrate their addition and subtraction problem-solving skills.
In this, the final lesson in 'Let's Solve Problems' for Year 2, your pupils will practise the problem-solving skills they've learnt during previous lessons in the scheme of work. Teach them the game 'Strike-Out', where they'll have to use mental and written methods if they want to win! This lesson is the ideal way to conclude the week's learning about methods for solving addition and subtraction problems.
An alternative 'Snakes and Ladders' activity is included, along with slides, teacher notes and printable game boards to support your teaching.
