Key Stage 2Properties of ShapesMathsAutumn TermYear 5

Starting off at a point where most children in Year 5 will feel comfortable, these ‘Angles and Triangles’ lessons quickly up the ante throughout the week, as children are challenged to apply their learning to increasingly complex tasks such as drawing shapes accurately using a protractor, using a growing range of vocabulary to describe shapes, and investigating the special properties of triangles which affect how many times they can be rotated exactly around a point!

#TheCompleteSeries5lessons

This downloadable 'Angles and Triangles' lesson pack for Year 5 has lesson plans, slideshow presentations and printable teaching resources.

#Lesson1ExploringAngles

This Exploring Angles lesson begins by reminding children of the properties of angles, focusing initially on right angles. Following this, the slideshow explains the differences between acute, obtuse and reflex angles. Your class will have the opportunity to estimate the size of a variety of angles and measure them using protractors.

This downloadable lesson has a lesson plan, slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Angle cards
#Lesson2MissingTriangleAngles

This Missing Triangle Angles lesson is design to boost your children's confidence surrounding the properties of angles. It’s helpful to know how many degrees are in a quarter, half, three-quarter and full turn – but do you know why? Challenge children to use this knowledge to help them calculate one or more missing angles on a straight line or around a point! During either of the two included activities, children may practise this skill, then check their calculations by measuring angles using protractors.

This downloadable lesson has a lesson plan, slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Clock angles
  • Blank clock faces
#Lesson3SpecialTypesofTriangles

Get straight to the point (!) by defining different types of triangle according to their special properties. The included slides and activities provide plenty of opportunities for children to identify and sort different triangles, and use a range of mathematical vocabulary to describe them, too!

This downloadable lesson has a lesson plan, slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
#Lesson4Propertiesof2DShapes

Step up the degree of challenge in this lesson, where children may explore the some special properties of 2D shapes, such as having parallel sides, or pairs of equal opposite/adjacent inside angles. Following this, they can either draw shapes accurately according to given properties, or sort shapes according to various different properties.

This downloadable lesson has a lesson plan, slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Challenge cards
  • Shape cards
  • Clue cards
#Lesson5Letsapplywhatwevelearned

This Year 5 Shape lesson challenges your children to apply all that they have previously learned about angles inside triangles and around a point as they undertake an investigation to find out which types of triangle can be rotated an exact number of times around a point to make ‘flower’ patterns!

This downloadable lesson has a lesson plan, slideshow presentation and printable teaching resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Challenge card
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Rotating shapes
