During these lessons your Year 1 class will be adding and subtracting objects! They will become familiar with the signs '+', '-' and '=' as they think carefully about what different number sentences are asking them to do. They will begin by working on groups of addition and subtraction problems, before making their own addition and subtraction questions.
Each of the five lessons in this scheme of work includes a detailed plan with a choice of differentiated activities, colourful and engaging slides, worksheets and a range of other printable resources.
Counting Objects 1
What does add mean? What does subtract mean? The slides remind the children what these words signify, which symbols are used to represent them as well as getting your class practically finding the answers. During the teaching input your children will be given a range of addition and subtraction problems. Following this, challenge your class to attempt two of the four included activities, two of the activities focus on addition and two of the activities focus on subtraction.

Counting Objects 2
This lesson gives your class the opportunity to consolidate their understanding of addition and subtraction questions. They will continue to work practically by counting out objects to solve problems. The included lesson plan includes a teacher’s input, four differentiated learning activities (two of the activities focus on addition and two of the activities focus on subtraction), a starter and plenary activity and some assessment questions.

Solving Problems 1
This lesson will have your class solving a mixture of addition and subtraction problems. During the teaching input your class will be exposed to two-part questions that include addition and subtraction. These questions will encourage your children to practise the skill of reading questions and understanding what they are being asked to do. After the teaching input, your class will access two of the four included activities. The activities have a mixture of addition and subtraction questions.

Solving Problems 2

Applying Knowledge
This final addition and subtraction lesson gets your children applying their knowledge of using objects to solve problems. They will be encouraged to use different methods to solve problems including using objects and drawing representations. Challenge your class to work out if the stock in the shop is increasing or decreasing, and to match question cards to their answers. The lesson plan includes a teacher’s input, four differentiated learning activities, a starter and plenary activity and some assessment questions.
