This scheme of work begins by asking the children to order numbers and create their own number lines. They are encouraged to think about what each number represents and how they will find missing numbers. They will work collaboratively and independently, developing their problem-solving skills throughout the activities.

This lesson starts with the children counting a group of pictures and using a number line to correctly write the amount there are. By focusing on number recognition, order and accurate counting skills your class will become more confident using a number line.

Pictures on a Number Line

This lesson starts with a number sentence being pictorially represented on a number line for the children to solve. The children are then challenged to draw or stick their own pictures on a number line to solve more problems. During this lesson they will have lots of opportunities to become confident using number lines and pictures to solve problems.

Jumping Along a Number Line

This lesson starts with a number sentence discussed and then solved by jumping along a number line. The children are then challenged to match number lines to number sentences or use number lines to solve number sentences.

Using Number Lines to Solve Problems

Now that your class are familiar with using number lines to solve problems they will have the opportunity use tabbed number lines. They will consolidate their skills by use number lines to help them find their way through a maze or solve number sentences they have written.
