From reasoning and problem-solving to fluency practice, each lesson helps children develop mathematical understanding in engaging, hands-on ways that make learning stick.
Teach your pupils to recognise number patterns and relate them to multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables in these five number sequence lesson plan packs for Year 2. During these lessons, children will use their prior knowledge of number patterns and number sequences in a variety of ways.
Over the course of this Year 2 Maths unit, children will order various sets of numbers shown on the included slides and number sequence worksheets, and practise counting forward and backwards in steps of 2, 3, 5 and 10. They'll relate groups of objects to multiples on a number line and use the knowledge and skills they learn to solve a variety of number sentences and complete a range of simple number sequences problem-solving activities.
Each of the five lessons included in this number sequences Year 2 scheme of work includes a detailed plan with teaching input and differentiated activities, a slideshow presentation and a range of printable resources including number pattern worksheets, games and activity cards.
Sequencing numbers
Sequencing numbers in order using number lines or number cards is the main focus of this lesson – the first of five complete lesson planning packs included in 'Let's use number patterns!' for Year 2 pupils.
With the included slides and detailed teaching input, you'll challenge your class to apply what they already know about number sequences as they try to find missing numbers on a number line, order number cards, and describe number sequences they recognise.
All of the number sequences included on the slides, worksheets and activity cards increase in multiples of two, three, five or ten – so this lesson is ideal if you intend to go on and teach other lessons in 'Let's use number patterns!'
What's included:
- Lesson plan
- Slides
- Activity ideas
- Differentiated worksheets
- Number cards
Count in steps of 2 and 10
Count in steps of 2 and 10, forward and backward from any number in this fun, challenging lesson for Year 2.
Counting in twos and tens is a vital skill and an essential step for young learners as they develop their skills of ordering and sequencing numbers. In this lesson, your Year 2 pupils will have plenty of opportunities to practise these skills as they attempt to answer the questions shown on the included slides and worksheets.
As with all five of the lesson planning packs included in 'Let's use number patterns!', this lesson includes a choice of differentiated activities, so you can select the most appropriate tasks for your pupils. In the alternative activity, children are challenged to use cards showing two or ten objects to help them answer a variety of number sequences questions.
What's included:
- Lesson plan
- Slides
- Activity ideas
- Differentiated worksheets
- Problem cards
- Group cards
- Question cards
Count in steps of 2, 5 and 10
Build on your pupils' understanding of number sequences by challenging them to count forwards and backwards in twos, fives and tens.
The slides included with this lesson—the third of five in 'Let's use number patterns!'—show a range of number sequencing questions alongside number lines and number squares to help them with counting forwards and backwards.
This lesson includes a choice of activities where children can practise what they've learned during the teaching input. The main activity includes differentiated worksheets, and there are several sets of number sequences cards included for use in the alternative activity, too.
What's included:
- Lesson plan
- Slides
- Activity ideas
- Problem cards
- Group cards
- Question cards
Count in steps of 2, 3, 5 and 10
Count forwards in backwards in multiples of 2, 3, 5 and 10 using a variety of pictorial representations, number lines and arrays.
In this, the fourth of five lessons in 'Let's use number patterns!' for Year 2, children will build on their developing number sequencing skills as they tackle a range of questions about number patterns.
As they work through the problems shown on the included slide show (and in the differentiated worksheets), they'll discover how they can use arrays—and their prior knowledge of times tables—to help them answer number sequences questions. As with every lesson in this unit of work, an alternative activity is included. If you decide this alternative is preferable for some of your pupils, they'll be challenged to sort and order various given arrays of objects. They'll have to think mathematically and use a range of maths vocabulary too, as they explain how and why they sorted the cards.

Odd and even number sequences
Think about the patterns and sequences that occur when counting in twos, threes, fives and tens.
In this, the final lesson in 'Let's use number patterns!' for Year 2, children will recognise patterns in number sequences and count forwards and backwards in multiples. They'll be challenged to apply what they've learnt previously as they fill in information (on the included worksheets) about the two, three, five and ten times tables, as well as identifying which of the numbers in sequences are odd or even.
The included alternative activity challenges children to sort and order cards showing amounts that increase in multiples of two, three, five or ten. They're also challenged to identify even numbers and compare number sequences, identifying similarities.
