Let's Use Number Bonds

This Year 2 'Let's Use Number Bonds!' scheme of work is a great way to introduce your class to number bonds to twenty and get them to apply their knowledge of number bonds to ten. During this week they will explore lots of different methods of representing numbers and discover how different representations can make finding number bonds to twenty easier.

How can we make twenty?

The first lesson in this series focuses on getting your class to find lots of the different ways to make twenty using cubes and bead strings.

Through hands-on activities your class will find and prove all of the number bonds.

Ten Frames

The second lesson in this series introduces 'ten frames' and encourages your class to visualise numbers.

Your class will use ten frames to represent numbers and find how many more they need to make twenty.

Counting On

The third lesson in this series encourages your class to use counting on as a strategy to find number bonds to twenty.

As they practice this skill they will become increasingly accurate, using objects or their fingers to help if necessary.

Number Lines

During the fourth lesson in this series your class will use number lines to find number bonds to twenty.

As they become more confident at recording their jumps on a number line they will be encouraged to use different size jumps to get to landmark numbers.

Solving Problems

Now that your class are confident with their number bonds to twenty they will be challenged to apply their knowledge to solve problems.

This lesson will give you the opportunity to see which methods and resources your class use, and if they can work systematically.
