These lessons are a great way to get your Year 1 class using number lines and becoming confident with numbers to one hundred. They start by drawing pictures on a number line and work towards recording jumps on a number line to solve simple problems.

Each of the five lessons in this scheme of work includes a detailed plan with a choice of differentiated activities, colourful and engaging slides, worksheets and a range of other printable resources.

 

Lesson 1

Using number lines and pictures

The first lesson in this series focuses on consolidating your class's understanding of using number lines to solve problems. Through hands-on activities your class will match number lines with pictures to number sentences to solve addition and subtraction problems.

Lesson 2

Solving one more and one less problems

In the second lesson of this series your class will record jumps of one on a number line to solve problems. They will be encouraged to think carefully about the direction they need to jump along the number line. Your children will have the opportunity to use numbered, tabbed or blank number lines.

Solving number sentences

Now that your class have practised recording jumps of one on a number line they will begin using number lines to solve increasingly challenging number sentences. The alternative activity for this lesson has the children playing an addition and subtraction game in pairs.

Finding the difference on a number line
